Associate FAQs

What is an Associate?
Associates work on a short term basis as assigned. They teach or provide support services and they work with and are supported by core staff.  As an Associate you will be issued with an Associate agreement, under this Agreement period you will be eligible to work on assignments offered to you.

How will I be offered Assignments?
When you have applied, and have been successful following an interview process we will carry out the necessary Safer Recruitment checks to enable you to perform work.  You will then be on our bank and be eligible to be offered assignments as they become available.  This will be reviewed on a three month rolling period.

What pre-employment checks will I be required to carry out?
We are committed to the safeguarding of our learners and believe that safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is every employee’s responsibility.  Placement on our Associate Bank or any employment offered with The Bedford College Group is subject to pre-employment checks as outlined below:

  • Enhanced DBS Check
  • References from your current and / or most recent employers, covering a period of not less than three years
  • Barred List – nationally held barred list checks to applicants are not barred from working with children and / or vulnerable adults
  • Teacher Prohibition Check – a check made for applicants to teaching posts using the DfE Secure Access system to verify whether an individual is prohibited from teaching
  • Qualifications – verification of qualifications relevant to the subjects you are able to teach and or the support area which you could support
  • Fitness for Work – we will ask you to complete a pre-employment health questionnaire to establish your fitness for work, relevant to assignments you would be carrying out.

What will I get paid and when?
The rate of pay will be determined by the level of the class/teaching and your qualification profile. We have a higher hourly rate for staff that hold a CertEd or higher.

Typically we pay:

  • £20.50 per hour for unqualified Lecturers depending on level of teaching
  • £21.50 – £24.50 per hour for qualified Lecturers depending on level of teaching.

We also offer attractive additional rates for market shortage areas.

Associates get paid one month in arrears by timesheet, i.e. payment for hours in October are paid in November on receipt of a correctly completed timesheet authorised by your manager.

The payroll deadline is the 5th of the month and all timesheets must be authorised and submitted to Human Resources no later than this date. All authorised timesheets will then be paid on the 27th of that month.

What progression opportunities are there?
Our Associates are people who take up teaching opportunities for a variety of reasons ranging from starting a career in teaching to achieving a better work-life balance through working flexibly or part-time. Many of our current permanent teaching staff and managers started as Associates and just like them you will be given support and opportunities to progress.

How do I apply?
We specifically designed an application form to enable you to apply simply for an Associate post.  To apply you must complete the online application form including your subject specialisms and availability.
